Introduction

Calibration of instruments is a vital part of any scientific experiment. An important experiment can be rendered useless or worse; produce false results, if the instruments were not properly calibrated. In this section, the calibration procedures which were utilized to produce the results in this dissertation are shown.

One of the key parameters in sprite measurements is the height of sprite features. As was shown in Chapter 5, sprite heights can be estimated from NLDN CG locations or from a presumed sprite maximum altitude. Sprite heights can also be accurately determined from triangulation studies. Fundamental to all of these techniques is that the location and orientation of the camera must be accurately known. The video timing also needs to be accurately known.
