Langmuir Laboratory, 1998

NLDN data with precise timing and LLP signal strengths was not available in 1998. Also, the electric field meter was placed at a different location relative to 1997. The field meter was situated on top of the balloon hangar where there were fewer metallic obstructions which could produce an azimuthal dependency in sensitivity. Also, the field meter was placed away from the edges of the hangar so that an electric field enhancement due to the building would be minimized.

Distant sferics recorded by the electric field meter at Langmuir were intercompared with the same sferic events recorded by an electric field meter at Marx Brook's residency in Socorro. It was found that the electric field recorded on the ridge at Langmuir was systematically $1.93\pm0.10$ times greater than that recorded in Socorro on relatively level terrain. The electric field recordings of the daytime sprite-producing discharges and daytime sprites were first reduced by this enhancement factor before the charge moment calculations were performed (see Chapter 4).
